Movie Review: Anyone But You

Ellery Blurton '24
Anyone But You has been a long awaited movie in the cinema world. This is in part because of its extensive media coverage, as the stars of the film, Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, continue to pop up all over TikTok and Instagram promoting their new rom-com.
Nevertheless, after going to see it last weekend, I believe all the promotion was justified and necessary.

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, Anyone but You is formulated around the consistent plotline of the classic romantic comedy movie: a chance encounter, a separation due to a disagreement, a realization of love, and a happy ending. As formulaic as this plotline might seem, It mimics some of the great rom-coms of the early 2000s such as How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days and 13 Going on 30. Further, the strategy of Anyone but You seems like an attempt to return to this “golden age” of romantic comedy. This movie succeeds in that its goal is not to inspire or incite, but rather to entertain.

Additionally, the release date, Dec. 22, was a brilliant marketing technique as it brought in crowds of people that missed summer, which is when the movie is set. Finally and most importantly, the connection between Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney is magnetic and a testament to their acting skills and charisma in their respective roles. While watching the movie, you find yourself rooting for their love, despite the conflict at the beginning. Each person I have asked regarding this movie has given the same answer: that it is very good and they absolutely love it. If that statement does not inspire you to see this movie, I’m not sure what will.
