Riding Program Hosts IEA Clinic

On Saturday, Oct. 17, the Chatham Hall Riding Program welcomed U.S. Hunter Jumper Association’s (USHJA) Manager of Jumper Programs Chris Mitchell for an Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) clinic.
Former director of the Randolph College Riding Program and Intercollegiate Horse Show Association head coach at Cornell University, Mitchell worked with each of our divisions and focused on a strong equitation position and horse control. His focus on proper positioning allowed the riders to have quality upward and downward transitions. With our over fences riders, Mitchell stressed the importance of maintaining rhythm, straightness, and energy throughout their courses.

The team rode in a typical horse show format, switching horses after warming up in order to practice adjusting their riding to fit a new horse. Students learned the power of a good rhythm, working on keeping their legs longer and underneath them at all times, and effective communication with their horse.
According to it's website, the USHJA is the US Equestrian-recognized national affiliate for the Hunter and Jumper disciplines. The USHJA is a competition-based sport organization that serves members through educational programs, awards and recognition, communication, and rules.

While the School IEA team cannot currently travel to horse shows, it is excitedly preparing to host a home show on Saturday, Nov. 14. The team will host another clinic in early November. Follow Chatham Hall Riding on Instagram and Twitter for updates!
