Caring with Purpose, Leading with Heart

Where Are They Now? Elaine Campbell ’98 in Medicine

For Elaine Campbell ’98, medicine is more than a profession. It is a calling grounded in connection, trust, and lifelong learning.

Today, Elaine serves as an internal medicine physician and Medical Director at Tryon Medical Partners in Huntersville, North Carolina. Her days begin early, often at 7:15 a.m., as she welcomes adult patients into her care. From preventive visits and annual physicals to managing complex chronic conditions like hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, her work spans the full spectrum of adult primary care. Each patient encounter is an opportunity not just to treat, but to listen, guide, and build lasting relationships.

Her path to this role reflects both intention and evolution. After completing her undergraduate studies at Duquesne University, she earned her medical degree from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. She then completed her residency in internal medicine at West Virginia University before beginning her career as a hospitalist at Kent Memorial Hospital.

Working in the hospital setting right out of residency was both fast-paced and deeply meaningful. Caring for patients at their most vulnerable affirmed her purpose. Still, she knew that one day she wanted to transition into primary care, where she could build long-term relationships and provide continuity across a patient’s health journey. That vision came to life in 2013, when she moved to North Carolina and stepped into outpatient medicine.

Ask Elaine what she loves most, and the answer is immediate: the relationships. Being a trusted partner in her patients’ lives and serving as the central hub of their care is both a privilege and a responsibility she does not take lightly. The hardest moments come when delivering difficult diagnoses, when compassion and clarity matter most.

She credits Chatham Hall with laying an essential foundation. The ability to manage time, persevere through challenges, and pursue intellectually rigorous work all took root during her years on campus.

For students considering a path in medicine, Elaine’s advice is practical and honest: seek out real clinical experiences. Volunteer in hospitals or nursing homes. Shadow physicians. Make sure you understand not just the science, but the human side of care.

Beyond her work, her life is anchored by family. She and her husband, whom she met during college, have built both a life and a shared commitment to medicine. He serves as the chief of emergency medicine in North Carolina, and together they are raising two children, Penelope and Jack. Time spent with them is, in her words, the true “icing on the cake.”

Her excellence has not gone unnoticed. Elaine has been recognized as a Top Doctor by Charlotte Magazine since 2022, an honor that reflects both her clinical expertise and the deep trust she builds with her patients.

From Chatham Hall to the front lines of patient care, Elaine’s journey is a powerful reminder that leadership often looks like service and that the most meaningful work begins with simply showing up for others.
