This summer, campus has been bustling with facilities updates and security enhancements as part of our ongoing commitment to improving our 365-acre campus. Below, hear from Director of Safety & Security Services Cierra Hubbard on the care and thoughtfulness behind the measures we take to support our community and enhance the Chatham Hall experience.
At Chatham Hall, safety and security are woven into the everyday rhythm of campus life. They are part of how we care for one another and ensure that every student feels supported, protected, and able to fully belong. In a 24/7 boarding community, that responsibility is both constant and personal. Our campus must feel welcoming while also remaining prepared and resilient. That balance is intentional. Students thrive best in an environment where they feel both supported and secure.
Safety begins with thoughtful design. Clear routines, well-lit pathways, coordinated communication, and structured access practices create a campus that feels calm and orderly without feeling restrictive. These elements work quietly in the background so students can focus on learning, leadership, friendship, and growth. Our approach is layered and collaborative, with systems, training, technology, and relationships working together. The goal is steady, reliable support for our students and community. When safety is thoughtfully integrated into daily life, community life flourishes.
Health and wellness are also part of this commitment. HALO is a safe, hospital-grade sanitization system that reduces airborne and surface pathogens in shared spaces, helping maintain a healthy campus environment without disrupting daily routines. Scheduled sanitization in residence halls and common areas supports the well-being of students and employees alike.
Equally important are the relationships that sustain these efforts. When students, faculty, staff, and visitors feel familiar with their surroundings and confident navigating campus, trust grows. In a close-knit boarding school, that familiarity becomes one of the strongest foundations for security. Security is not about restriction; it is an expression of care and shared responsibility designed to support connection rather than constrain it.
What You Don’t See (But Can Count On)
Much of the work that sustains our secure 365-acre campus happens quietly through preparation and partnership, often long before it is ever needed. Chatham Hall maintains ongoing collaboration with local law enforcement and emergency response agencies, and regular campus walkthroughs allow first responders to build familiarity with our facilities, layout, and emergency protocols. Should assistance ever be required, that familiarity helps ensure a coordinated and effective response. These partnerships reflect thoughtful planning rather than reaction. Visible preparation is one way we demonstrate diligence and stewardship.
Training is approached as an opportunity for growth and shared responsibility. Emergency response exercises bring faculty, staff, and health professionals together to clarify roles, strengthen communication, and build confidence in high-stress moments. When preparation is consistent and thoughtful, response remains steady and coordinated. Clear, timely communication supports this work, ensuring preparedness efforts remain transparent, reassuring, and grounded in care.
Ongoing environmental health initiatives further contribute to the overall stability of campus life. Health, safety, and security are interconnected, each strengthening the resilience of our boarding community. Preparedness is not rooted in fear. It is rooted in care, a deliberate and ongoing commitment to responsibility, clarity, and partnership.
While much of this work remains unseen, it reflects something central to the Chatham Hall tradition: stewardship. A secure campus is built through consistency, collaboration, and shared responsibility. At Chatham Hall, safety and security are part of how we uphold our responsibility to one another and preserve the strength of this community for generations to come.
As part of its ongoing commitment to safety and preparedness, Chatham Hall hosted a large-scale Active Shooter and Mass Casualty training exercise on May 26, 2026. The drill included more than a dozen local, state, and federal agencies, including the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, the FBI, and regional emergency medical services.
The exercise reflects the School’s long-standing partnership with first responders and its proactive approach to campus security. Regular collaboration, walkthroughs, and emergency preparedness training ensure strong coordination and familiarity with campus facilities and protocols.
At Chatham Hall, preparedness is rooted in care. Safety is woven into daily campus life, supporting an environment where students feel secure, supported, and able to thrive.
