January Term Veterinary Internship

Equine science students gain real-world experience in January Term Veterinary Internship
At Chatham Hall, education extends far beyond the classroom— especially for students in the Equine Science program. One of the most rewarding extensions of this course is the January Term Veterinary Internship at Chatham Animal Clinic. Each year, one to two outstanding students are selected for this hands-on experience based on their performance in Equine Science and their demonstrated passion for veterinary medicine.

During January Term 2025, Paloma E. ‘25 and Beverly K. ‘25 were selected to participate in this two-week internship, where they became active members of the veterinary team. Working closely with the hospital’s veterinarians and staff, they gained immersive, day-to-day experience in animal care. Their time at the clinic offered a rich variety of learning opportunities, from assisting with equine wellness checks and observing diagnostic procedures to supporting routine surgeries and learning about general health and lameness assessments. Beyond equine medicine the internship provided exposure to a wide range of veterinary specialties. The students had hands-on experience with small animal care and even exotics: helping to treat dogs, cats, birds, and farm animals. They learned about preventive care, diagnostic tools, surgical procedures, and the importance of strong client communication, developing both technical knowledge and soft skills essential to the veterinary profession.

This internship not only strengthens students’ understanding of veterinary science, but it also deepens the incredible partnership between Chatham Hall and Chatham Animal Clinic. The veterinarians generously share their time and expertise, mentoring students with enthusiasm and care. Their commitment to fostering curiosity and professional growth makes this relationship one of the most valued aspects of the Equine Science program.

The January Term Veterinary Internship is a cornerstone experience for students considering careers in animal health. It represents the very best of Chatham Hall’s commitment to experiential learning—empowering students to explore their passions, build real-world skills, and form lasting connections with professionals in the field.
