Riding Facility Updates & Improvements

Ally Doyon
Chatham Hall's stables receive several key upgrades
This year has been an exciting time for improvements at Chatham Hall’s stables, with several key upgrades enhancing our facility’s functionality, safety, and aesthetics. One of the significant improvements includes installing new knee walls and footing in the indoor arena. Built with pressure-treated wood, the new knee walls have made the arena safer for both horse and rider and should last for years to come. Additionally, the Mars Arena had a complete overhaul with a new laser-leveled base and the installation of dust-free footing from FootingFirst. FootingFirst is a leader in the industry for dust-free, non-water-dependent footing. This new footing is safer for both horse and rider, saves thousands of gallons of water each week, and should last significantly longer than traditional footing products.

A brand-new covered arena was completed just in time for our April Southwest Virginia Hunter Jumper Association (SWVHJA)/United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) Outreach Competition. Offering year-round usability regardless of weather conditions, the covered arena is seamlessly connected to the indoor arena by a covered breezeway and boasts the same FootingFirst footing. An incentive for competitors is always a safe and convenient schooling area, and this new structure is further expanding the Program’s capabilities by allowing for this and much more. We have also found the space incredibly helpful for teaching smaller lesson groups and using it during inclement weather to prevent overcrowding in the Mars Arena.

These improvements reflect Chatham Hall’s commitment to creating a top-tier facility that prioritizes the well-being of horses and the comfort of riders. With these new additions, the Riding Program is better equipped to accommodate the increased number of riders joining it and make it a more versatile and enjoyable space for everyone.
