Zhang '24 Studies Engineering at Duke Summer STEM Academy

For three weeks in July, Xinyue “Stella” Zhang ‘24 participated in the intensive Duke Summer STEM Academy.

This immersive program was led by the Duke University Thomas Lord Department of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science and featured hands-on experiences centered in engineering design practice through active application of theory. According to their website, students learned about computer-aided drafting, advanced manufacturing techniques, project management, product design, technical communication, and teamwork throughout the duration of the academy.

“It was a wonderful experience. I really wanted to participate in this program because I would like to learn more about engineering and have more hands-on experience,” said Zhang. “I think after attending this program, I am more determined in continuing in the engineering major or even career.”

During the program, the students split into teams of four to address important global issues through innovative solutions. Zhang was a member of VitAlert, which created “a wearable device equipped with advanced sensors and communication technology, capable of sending real-time alerts to caregivers, family members, or even medical professionals, prompting timely medical attention during critical situations.” The team not only came up with this incredible idea, but created a prototype and corresponding app.

On campus, Zhang is a member of the TuTu Turtles robotics team and will be taking Honors Physics 2 this year.

“I am also continuing my project in this program into different science fairs and competitions. I am also planning to open a research club this year to teach others about research skills,” noted Zhang.
