Spring Performing Arts Bring Stories to Life

This spring, student performing artists brought many stories to life for the community in the Van Voorhis Lecture Hall “Dutch” through theater and dance.
The spring dancers' performance focused on nature with nine dances centered around the theme of “Celestial Rhythms.” The dances replicated the natural patterns and cycles observed in the movement and interactions of celestial bodies, such as planets and astrological phenomena. Starting with creation and ending with a community dance about home, the dancers were aided by music, sound effects, and lighting to highlight natural elements. The spring dance performance was choreographed and directed by Ms. Kaykeel Dillard.

In recent years, the spring theatre selection has taken on an experimental or non-traditional format, including this year’s production of Gloria: A Life by Emily Mann. The play centers on the life and legacy of Gloria Steinem, American journalist, lecturer, political activist, and feminist organizer, and is told through her perspective. Steinem is narrated by four different “Glorias,” including Caroline Greganti ‘24, Sophia Taylor ‘24, Caroline Nichols ‘24, and Hadley Busbee ‘24. They take turns walking around the floor of Dutch, which features audience members on all four sides, and acting out silhouettes of historical events with appearances by other students playing historical figures such as Florynce “Flo” Kennedy, Bella Abzug, and Wilma Mankiller. The play tackles many tough topics, allowing the students to not only practice their acting skills, but also gain new perspectives. The production was extra special for our community as Steinem served as the 2011-2012 Polly Wheeler Guth ’44 Leader in Residence. The play was directed by Mr. Cameron Ayres.

Pictures of both productions can be found on the School’s SmugMug.
