Student Summer Adventures: Janie Leung '19 Learns to Build Apps

Chatham Hall
This summer, Janie Leung ’19 had the chance to intern with Freedom Communications Ltd., where she got a first-hand look at the app development process and working on a client-focused project.  We sat down with Janie to get the full story.
So, what exactly were you doing this summer?
I spent one month interning at a website and app design company. I got to use Adobe Dreamweaver to modify HTML code for our clients. For example, I worked on an event web page for an international STEM conference and a web page/app for an online magazine. Because of my experience on the Chatham Hall robotics team,  the Tutu Turtles, I also designed STEM courses for local elementary and middle schools that prepared students for robotics competitions.

What was your favorite part of the internship?
My favorite part of the internship was communicating with the clients because it was the first time that I got to join a business conference. I really enjoyed exchanging ideas with the clients. It was fascinating to learn how the industry works.

What is one experience from the internship that you will never forget?
I will never forget the time we submitted a website design proposal to a government organization! We spent lots of time polishing the proposal, and I will never forget running in the rain to protect the 30-page proposal from getting wet.

How do you plan on using what you've learned in the future?
This internship helped me choose my college major. It was a fantastic experience in computer science, and it showed me the versatility of computer engineering, where I can work with both software and hardware. I ended this summer with the clear decision to major in computer engineering in college.
