Woolen Wonders: A View Into the Knitting and Crochet Club

Chrisette Jones ‘26
Within the vast sea of clubs and organizations of Chatham Hall, there is a new group of students who dedicate parts of their week to the multifaceted craft of fiber arts. This group is the Knitting and Crochet Club!
Run by club leader Anne Rachel Sheppard '27 and advised by Ms. Fisk, this club usually meets on Tuesdays during first office hours. The main intention of the Knitting and Crochet Club is to learn from and teach each other how to knit and crochet. This club is open to everyone; experience in either knitting or crocheting is not needed in order to join.

After obtaining an opportunity to do a group interview with the Knitting and Crochet Club, I was truly able to understand the appeal of this amazing group of people. This club is not just a space for learning, but a supportive and welcoming environment where you can feel safe to ask questions and grow. A typical club meeting looks like some teaching on Anne-Rachel’s end, as well as giving and receiving help from group members on projects. Anne-Rachel specializes in teaching crochet, while Ms. Fisk focuses on knitting patterns. One of the main things I noticed about this club was the strong sense of community. Though new, this club allows its members to foster a smaller community of people within our student body who can bond over a peaceful activity at the end of their school day. Their responses to some of my questions further exemplified this: their favorite aspects of this club so far include assisting each other with designs and going to craft stores on the weekends. The newer members particularly enjoy learning how to create different crafts, deepening their knowledge of crochet and knitting, and strengthening their newly discovered skills.

Many individuals have started their crafting journey through this club, and are committed to cultivating their newfound talents here. Some of the projects that they would like to create this semester include flower pot coasters, stuffed animals, flowers, hearts, and clothing—you can learn how to make all this and more by stopping by at a meeting! Not only is crocheting a sustainable alternative to buying many hyper-consumerist products, it also has great health benefits that can assist you in tending to your mental wellness. Crocheting and knitting help to reduce stress, relieve depression, boost self-esteem and creativity, and increase your mindfulness. Coming in community with others who share the same interest as you offers an opportunity to connect with others and achieve your goals!

As the Crochet and Knitting Club continues to explore the depths of their creativity, its members are able to care for their creative prowess and mental health. Through their shared passion, they are able to be active participants in their community, continually helping each other grow and nurture their developing hobby. Make sure to check out the Knitting and Crochet Club on Tuesdays at 1:40 p.m., either in the Small Drawing Room or Ms. Fisk’s office. The support is endless, and so is the yarn!
