Deigl '23 Reflects on Architecture Camp

This summer, Avery Deigl ‘23 spent a week at Virginia Tech’s School of Architecture + Design camp, Inside Design. Below is her reflection:
I spent the week learning about the different types of architecture and what it would be like to be an architecture student. It was a super fun and very busy week!

A typical day started with breakfast, and then as a camp we would do an observation walk to the studio. Each day we would focus on something different. We observed things like color, repeating sounds, and boundaries. Once we arrived at the studio we had a short lecture about the basic theme of the day, then we would work on assignments until lunch. We would wander back to the studio at one o’clock for our guest speaker. We had professors from the school and architects that had designed buildings in Blacksburg talk to us about their jobs and specialties. After the lectures we had studio time that was focused on a main assignment. We would break for dinner at five o’clock and some days return to the studio at seven o’clock for some more building. Other days we would play beach volleyball until the outdoor lights turned off. We would return to our rooms after and be so excited to do it all again tomorrow.

Overall, this experience was amazing. I learned so much about being an architect. The teaching architects always asked us questions about our work that would make us think more deeply about design. This camp was so fun and I met so many new people. This experience definitely reinforced my hopes of being an architect!
