Where Relationships Shape Who We Become

Josh Doyon, Director of Student & Community Life

The whole picture of the Chatham Hall experience

One of the most meaningful aspects of a boarding school education is the strength of the relationships that form within it. Chatham Hall fosters a small residential school community that promotes learning and experiences that extend far beyond the classroom. Faculty and staff do not simply work with students during the school day; they live alongside them, share meals, attend events, support, show up, and engage in the everyday moments, big and small, that shape who students are becoming. This shared environment allows us to know each student deeply as a community member, learner, athlete, dancer, rider, and, most importantly, a person.

Having faculty and staff live and work on campus, they interact with students across many contexts: academic classes, Chapel, athletics, Assembly, on and off-campus events, evening study halls, and within the halls. These multiple touchpoints can help to create a more complete and consistent understanding of each student’s strengths, challenges, and growth over time. Small changes do not go unnoticed, and successes, both big and small, are recognized and celebrated. This continuity of care is one of the greatest advantages of a small boarding school setting.

Many studies show that students who experience a strong sense of belonging at school, the feeling of being accepted, respected, and supported, are more likely to be engaged, motivated, and successful academically and socially. Studies link school belonging to improved academic achievement, better mental health, increased attendance and engagement, and higher overall well-being. When students feel connected and supported by adults and peers, they are more confident, happier, and more resilient in the face of challenges.

In small, close-knit communities like Chatham Hall, faculty and staff are better able to build the supportive relationships that foster belonging. Adults can intentionally guide students through transitions, celebrate progress with genuine insight, and provide timely support when hurdles arise. This is especially important during adolescence, when students’ social and emotional needs are rapidly evolving.

For families, the value is unmistakable. A small boarding school environment means peace of mind — knowing your child is surrounded by adults who genuinely care, who notice the details, and who are committed to helping each student grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

At its heart, boarding school is about relationships. In a small, residential environment, those relationships are personal, consistent, and transformative, creating a foundation that supports students not just during their time on campus, but throughout their lives.
