Forensics Students Engage with Real-World Investigation
Students in Mrs. Amelia Kolach’s forensics class at Chatham Hall received an invaluable glimpse into real-world criminal investigation when Detective Janet Sergent of the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office visited as a guest speaker. Detective Sergent, accompanied by a fellow colleague, shared insights from an actual county case, bringing classroom theory vividly to life.
The presentation came at an ideal time, as students have been immersed in foundational forensic techniques, including observation skills, crime scene mapping, evidence collection procedures, and analysis of trace evidence such as hair and fabric samples. Detective Sargent illustrated how these exact skills are applied in active investigations, walking students through the investigative process of a past Pittsylvania County case and demonstrating the precision required in the field.
Students had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions about forensic methodology, the challenges of real-world evidence collection, and how classroom learning translates to professional practice. The visit reinforced the critical importance of meticulous documentation, proper evidence handling, and keen observational skills that students have been developing throughout the course.
"Having practicing professionals share their experiences connects our coursework to actual criminal justice work," noted Mrs. Kolach, Forensics instructor. "Detective Sargent's presentation showed our students exactly how the techniques they're learning are used to solve real cases in our own community."
The class extends its sincere gratitude to Detective Sargent and the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office for supporting student learning and providing this enriching and inspiring educational experience.
