When people hear the word “philanthropy,” they often think first about a gift - a check written, a pledge fulfilled, a number added to a campaign total.
But at Chatham Hall, philanthropy is never just about the gift.
It is about intention. It is about alignment. It is about shaping an experience for girls that is BOLD, STRONG, COMPETITIVE, and deeply rooted in wellness and belonging. Strategic philanthropy is the quiet architecture behind the visible transformation of a School.
Every classroom conversation, every athletic practice, every leadership opportunity, and every moment of growth that happens here is supported, in ways both visible and invisible, by thoughtful generosity. Strategic philanthropy asks a deeper question: not simply how much was given, but why, and toward what end? When our community invests in Chatham Hall, those investments are guided by a long-term vision. We are not simply funding programs; we are building infrastructure for possibility. We are equipping curious thinkers to lead lives of impact.
In keeping with our commitment to responsible stewardship, every major capital project includes a 10% allocation to support long-term maintenance and operational needs. This forward-looking approach ensures that new facilities are not only built well, but sustainably supported for generations to come - protecting both the investment itself and the s’s future financial health.
The same is true of faculty support, financial aid, leadership programming, global learning, and student wellness initiatives. Donors are not simply responding to needs; they are partnering with us to shape the future of the School.
As Director of Strategic Advancement, I spend much of my time listening to alumnae, to parents, to trustees, to friends of the School. I listen for what matters most to them, and then I work to align those passions with the priorities that will most meaningfully impact our students.
That alignment is where strategy lives. It ensures that generosity strengthens the operating foundation of the School. It ensures that capital investments do not outpace sustainability. It ensures that today’s gift does not simply solve today’s problem, but builds tomorrow’s opportunity.
Philanthropy at Chatham Hall is not transactional. It is relational. It is thoughtful. It is mission-centered. And when done well, it becomes transformative - not just for the institution, but for the students whose lives are shaped by it.
When a girl stands taller in the gym, when she finds her voice in a classroom discussion, when she steps into leadership with confidence, there is often a quiet line that traces back to someone who believed in this place enough to invest in it.
