A Season of Becoming

Ed Dougherty, Director of Innovation and Strategic Initiatives

January Term and the Power of Real-World Learning

This January, Chatham Hall once again transformed the rhythm of winter into something dynamic, purposeful, and distinctly ours. JanTerm has quickly become more than a break from routine. It is a season of exploration, courage, and real-world learning that brings our mission to life in visible and powerful ways.

Across campus and beyond, students stepped into experiences designed to stretch their thinking and deepen their sense of purpose. Twenty-eight students ventured into internships with organizations such as the Animal Medical Center, the Chatham Mayor’s Office, Pittsylvania County Courts, the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, and many more. In offices, courtrooms, clinics, and studios, they asked questions, solved problems, and saw firsthand how classroom learning translates into meaningful work.

Another group of students partnered with the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in Danville for a Teamship experience, working alongside professionals. Students engaged in authentic design thinking, collaboration, and presentation. They were not completing hypothetical assignments. They were contributing ideas, refining prototypes, and pitching solutions with confidence.

Back on campus, SPARK Sessions and afternoon classes buzzed with energy. Students pursued passions, tested new skills, and shared their expertise. The culminating showcases made one thing clear: when given ownership, students rise. The questions they asked were deeper. The risks they took were bolder. The pride they felt in sharing their work was unmistakable.

JanTerm is intentionally different. It is designed to connect academic growth with personal transformation. It challenges students to see themselves not only as learners, but as contributors, innovators, and leaders. Whether navigating professional spaces during internships, presenting policy recommendations in Deliberation for Democracy, or pitching creative solutions through Teamship, our students practiced the habits that matter most: curiosity, resilience, collaboration, and purpose.

What makes JanTerm especially powerful is the way it strengthens our community. Faculty mentors walked alongside students in new ways. Community partners opened their doors. Families joined us for showcases that celebrated authentic learning in action. Together, we witnessed what happens when time is structured with intention and trust is placed in young women to lead their own growth.

At its heart, JanTerm is about possibility. It is about stepping outside comfort zones, discovering new interests, and realizing that learning does not live within four walls. It is a reminder that when Chatham Hall students are empowered to explore boldly and think deeply, they consistently achieve more than they imagined possible.
And as winter fades into spring, the impact of these weeks lingers — in newfound confidence, in clarified goals, and in the quiet but powerful realization that they are ready for whatever comes next.
