Friendship, Small-World Moments, and a Shared Love for Chatham Hall
For the second year in a row, the Chatham Hall Alumnae Council has celebrated Valentine’s Day with a heartwarming tradition, sending Valentine’s-themed notes, letters, and cards to alumnae from the Classes of 1945–1955. What began as a simple gesture has grown into something much bigger, creating friendships that span generations, delightful “small world” moments, and a shared love for Chatham Hall that unites alumnae across decades.
This year’s project highlights just how special these connections can be. Consie West ’66 of Manchester, VT, sent a Valentine to Anita Pomerance ’52 of Pawlet, Vermont. What started as a note blossomed into lunch, laughter, and a joyful afternoon of reminiscing. They shared memories of Mr. Yardley’s arrival, remembered Miss Gilliam fondly, and discovered their paths had quietly crossed over the years. In true Chatham Hall girl spirit, Anita enjoys riding her beautiful horses in the summer and teaching little skiers in Bromley in the snowy winter.
“Bravo to the Valentines project,” Consie wrote afterward. “I now have a new Chatham friend. What fun we had!”
The Valentine’s project connects alumnae across generations, from the Classes of 1945–1955 to as recently as the Class of 2021. Each note holds the potential to spark friendships, celebrate shared memories, and remind everyone that the Chatham Hall sisterhood endures, no matter how many decades separate graduation years.
At its heart, this tradition is about more than cards in the mail. It is about honoring legacy, building connections, and celebrating the small-world magic that happens when women who love Chatham Hall find each other, sometimes right in their own backyard!
