Since 2022, Coach Zachary Smith has redefined what girls' golf looks like at Chatham Hall—and across the Commonwealth. With vision and unwavering belief in our students, he revived the sport at Chatham Hall and built a thriving foundation for the future of girls' golf in Virginia.
Thanks to the support of a private donor he secured, Coach Smith didn't just restart a team—he established a movement for girls' golf in Virginia. He helped found the Blue Ridge Girls Golf Conference and its Championship tournament, giving young female golfers across the region a competitive home where none existed before.
Coach Smith's leadership has earned well-deserved recognition, including being named Blue Ridge Conference Girls Golf Coach of the Year for three consecutive years—2023, 2024, and 2025. But his impact goes far beyond trophies. As a member of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) since 2022, he has been a driving force in advocating for equity and access in girls' athletics.
His pioneering efforts have led to historic firsts:
The first-ever Girls' State Championship was hosted in the Danville area
The first VISAA Girls State Individual 18-hole Tournament at Tuscarora Country Club
And coming soon—the inaugural VISAA Girls' Team State Tournament at Williamsburg National on May 13, 2025
Coach Smith's leadership has illuminated and elevated girls' golf, transforming it into a dynamic and empowering space where young women are encouraged to grow, compete, and lead—both on and off the course.
