O'Keeffe Art Contest Winners Announced

Chatham Hall
After weeks of submissions, winners have been announced for the Georgia O’Keeffe inspired art contest. The contest was sponsored by the Iris literary magazine and featured a wide range of submissions, from watercolor to sculpture.
Anna Gardner ’18 won for her ceramic piece entitled “Mirrored Orchid”, Lelia Carlson ’18 for her photograph, “Carnation”, and Iris Wo ’19 with her piece “Shaped Color”. Each of the winners received a 2018 O'Keeffe Calendar, a copy of Georgia by Dawn Tripp, and O'Keeffe notecards. Their work will also be featured in the upcoming issue of the Iris. Speaking of the excellent art submitted for the contest, Iris sponsor, Mary Edmonds said,  "Georgia O'Keeffe's style, passion, and extraordinary individuality spoke to the participants and elicited outstanding work from them all."

The contest was organized in response to the all-school visit to the Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern exhibit at the Reynolda House earlier this year. Students spent the day learning about O’Keeffe’s life, viewing the exhibit, and making their own art. In classes led by Reynolda House employees, students had the opportunity to create a piece in the style of O’Keeffe which served as a lens through which to better understand her work. Several students elected to use the art they created in that class as their contest submission.
