Yarn Bombing for Earth Day

Chatham Hall’s Up-cycle Lab Ignites Creativity and Connection
Chatham Hall is proud to announce the launch of its 2025 Up-cycle Lab Community Yarn Bomb, a collaborative and creative initiative designed to bring together the school community and the Town of Chatham in celebration of Earth Day.

This vibrant effort is the result of a partnership between the Whitner Art Studio Fiber Lab, the Spiritual Life League, and the Sustainability Club. Students in Art and Design II and IV have worked with dedication to craft colorful yarn panels that will adorn the trees of the Chatham Hall Arboretum from Tuesday, April 2, through Saturday, May 10. This project is not only a celebration of artistic expression but also a reflection of Chatham Hall’s deep commitment to environmental stewardship and community connection.

Set on the front quad and extending to the Shortleaf Pine near the main gate, the installation includes a special dedication to Georgia O’Keeffe. Guests of all ages and skill levels are invited to join the process by stitching panels together or simply enjoying the artwork at their own pace.

Yarn bombing—also known as guerrilla knitting—is a form of street art where public spaces are wrapped in vibrant knitted or crocheted designs. In this case, it brings together creativity, sustainability, and community as Chatham Hall students and faculty transform the Arboretum into a temporary outdoor gallery.

This year's yarn bomb promotes environmental consciousness by using second-hand yarn and materials, reinforcing the importance of reuse and sustainability. It also supports the mission of the Up-Cycle Fiber Lab: to make art accessible and inclusive, encouraging participation from individuals across the broader community.
As a final thoughtful detail, each tree panel includes a pocket, inviting community members to leave personal notes to the trees or to future visitors.

Participating Fiber Lab and Art Students: Lainy R. ’26, Lucy Page E. ’26, Avery H. ’26, Jane W. ’26, Rachel W. ’28, Rachel T. ’27, Auri H.J. ’25, Ella I. ’27, Cami A. ’27, Kayla A.D. ’28, Annie Q. ’27, Raine B. ’27, Jayla B. ’27, Madison K. ’28, and Victoria C. ’27.

We invite you to explore, reflect, and celebrate the creativity and care that went into this Earth Day installation.
