Letter from the Rector & Head of School

Read a letter from the Rector & Head of School, Sara Stephenson
Dear families, alumnae, and friends,

As I come to the end of my first year of tenure as Rector, it seems impossible that twelve months could have passed so swiftly. Education is a highly cyclic profession and is deeply rooted in the measurement of time: next semester, next year, the progression from class to class, matriculation, and Commencement. When I first became a classroom teacher in Dallas, Texas, and went home to London for the Christmas holidays, my mother was astonished (and constantly pointed out!) that I looked at my wristwatch over and over. I hadn’t even realized that I was doing so. But it is a natural trait for an educator to check, mark, and measure time, track progress, strive for momentum, and look ahead to new goals and accomplishments.

While looking forward is an inherent and proud trait of the Chatham Hall mission and community, it is fitting to pause to reflect on the last few months with pride and gratitude. January Term was reimagined with an increased focus on wellness and innovation. Strong connections were made with alumnae in a wide range of professions both during and after January Term classes. We opened two new spaces: the new covered arena adjacent to the Mars Arena and the Athletic, Health, and Wellness Center. The schooling ring opens our equestrian program to more riders and larger shows, and allows more lessons to be held in inclement weather. Our spectacular Athletic, Health, and Wellness Center is already a hub of community life. It has become a favorite and beloved space since the day it was opened for student use.

Commencement was marked by some new traditions, as 34 students were welcomed into the body of our alumnae. Like generations of women who preceded them, they are strong, vibrant, courageous, grounded, curious, and innovative. While graduation outfits have changed with passing decades and trends, the spirit of this important occasion remains unaltered: we send this wonderful class off on the next chapter of their journey but remind them to always come home to Chatham Hall.

As our beautiful spring becomes a glorious summer, I am reminded anew that change is an inevitable and critical part of life. At Chatham Hall, we embrace momentum, relish forward motion, and also welcome reflection. As the seasons change, so do we. We move ahead with hope, optimism, and positivity while remaining grateful for and grounded in all that tradition has offered us and our beloved school.

Esto Perpetua,
