More Than a Milestone: What $50 Million Means to Chatham Hall

It is an extraordinary achievement, particularly when you remember where this Campaign began. Boundless Potential was launched with an ambitious $35 million goal, itself a significant stretch for Chatham Hall. As alumnae, families, trustees, and friends responded with remarkable generosity, the School dared to think bigger. The Campaign grew with the aspirations of the community behind it, ultimately setting a $50 million goal.

And now, we have surpassed it. There is much to celebrate in that sentence. But what matters most is not simply that we reached a number. It is what that number represents. It represents belief. More than $50 million has been committed because generations of people believe deeply in Chatham Hall and in what is possible when girls are given an extraordinary environment in which to discover the full measure of their strengths, their voices, their ambitions, and their possibilities.

Our responsibility, and our privilege, is to create the environment in which that potential can flourish. That belief has been at the heart of Boundless Potential from the beginning. Through this Campaign, donors have invested in the people, places, programs, and experiences that allow a Chatham Hall education to remain distinctive and transformative. They have strengthened the School’s endowment and Annual Fund. They have supported faculty and programs. They have invested in the campus and in spaces designed specifically around the ways girls learn, grow, lead, compete, connect, and thrive.

Perhaps no place embodies that investment more visibly than the Wagoner-LaDuke Center for Athletics, Health and Wellness. Its 31,000 square feet have transformed a central part of campus, but its significance is much greater than the building itself. It reflects a commitment to the whole student - to her health, confidence, strength, resilience, and well-being - and to ensuring that Chatham Hall girls have facilities worthy of their aspirations.

The Campaign has also reminded us that transformational philanthropy is rarely the work of a single moment or a single person.

It is built relationship by relationship, conversation by conversation, and gift by gift.

It is the alumna who gives because someone once invested in her.

It is the parent who has watched a daughter become more fully herself.

It is the trustee willing to lead by example.

It is the faculty or staff member who makes a gift while giving so much of themselves every day to the students in their care.

It is the donor making a first gift and the donor making a transformational commitment. It is the person remembering Chatham Hall in an estate plan so that girls she will never meet will have opportunities she believes they deserve.

Every one of those choices is part of this $50 million story. And fittingly, it was an extraordinary act of generosity looking toward that future that carried Boundless Potential beyond $50 million: a $1 million planned gift from an alumna who chose to include Chatham Hall in her estate plans. Her commitment will extend the impact of this Campaign far beyond its December conclusion, creating opportunities for generations of Chatham Hall girls she may never know. In many ways, it captures what this Campaign has always been about - not simply what we can make possible today, but what we choose to make possible for those who come after us.

In these final months, our Board of Trustees demonstrated that same spirit in a particularly powerful way. Trustees were called upon to make one final Campaign commitment - and 100 percent of our voting trustees responded. That unanimous participation speaks to something larger than any individual gift. It reflects a Board willing to lead by example and a shared belief in Chatham Hall, its mission, and the future we are building together. And throughout the Campaign, that belief has extended far beyond the Board.

Our Campaign Co-Chairs, Jane Garnett ’73 and Nina Botsford ’72, have led with determination, vision, and an unwavering conviction about what Chatham Hall can be. Campaign volunteers, alumnae leaders, Class Agents, parents, faculty and staff, and countless friends have opened doors, made calls, returned to campus, shared Chatham Hall’s story, encouraged others to participate, and invested personally in the School’s future.

That collective commitment is what makes this milestone so significant. More than $50 million is also a statement about the future.

At a moment when the value of educating girls in environments intentionally designed for them has never been more important, this community has made an extraordinary declaration of confidence in Chatham Hall’s mission. Our donors have said that this School matters. They have said that educating girls matters. They have said that the opportunities Chatham Hall provides today should be even stronger for the girls who will walk through Pruden’s doors tomorrow - and for generations to come. That is the enduring legacy of Boundless Potential. And we are not finished.

The Campaign continues through December 31, 2026. Surpassing $50 million is an extraordinary milestone, but it is not a finish line that asks us to stop. It is an invitation to consider how much more is possible when a community believes deeply enough to invest together.

There are still opportunities to strengthen the Annual Fund, build the endowment, support the Wagoner-LaDuke Center, and ensure that the momentum created through Boundless Potential carries forward long after the Campaign formally concludes. Because ultimately, the most important measure of this Campaign will not be the final number we announce. It will be found in the girls who benefit from it.

In a student discovering a talent she did not know she possessed. In an athlete growing stronger and more confident. In a young woman finding her voice in a classroom, on a stage, in a studio, on a horse, on an athletic field, or around a Harkness table. In a graduate leaving Chatham Hall prepared not simply for college, but to enter the world knowing who she is and believing in what she can contribute. Those possibilities existed long before this Campaign, and they will continue long after it. What more than $50 million gives Chatham Hall is the ability to nurture them more boldly.

That is worth celebrating. And that is what Boundless Potential has always been about.
