The Fantasticks

Chatham Hall’s Blackbox Theater was transformed into a world of moonlight and imagination as students brought The Fantasticks to life. Written by Tom Jones with music by Harvey Schmidt, The Fantasticks is the longest-running musical in the world, beloved for its breathtaking poetry, theatrical sophistication, and timeless storytelling.

At the center of the story are two moonlit lovers, played by Virginia B. ’29 and Yoyo Bai ’26, who keep their romance secret from their fathers, portrayed by Addy A. ’27 and Miriam S. ’29. While the fathers pretend to be enemies, they secretly scheme to bring the young couple together. A wall, gardens, mischief, and confusion send the families on a journey filled with humor, despair, and discovery.

Guiding the audience through it all is the charismatic narrator El Gallo, played by Ivy Branch ’26, who invites us into a world of romance, illusion, and revelation. As the young couple falls in love, grows disillusioned, and ultimately finds their way back to one another, they discover the deeper truth behind El Gallo’s poignant words: “Without a hurt, the heart is hollow.”

The production’s supporting cast added both humor and heart. Jordan M. ’29 as The Old Actor (Henry) and Sophie T. ’29 as The Man Who Dies (Mortimer) helped the fathers carry out their elaborate plans. The Mutes, Sammie C. ’29, Scarlet D. ’29, and Isa W. ’29, brought movement, energy, and visual storytelling to every scene, bringing a dynamic presence to the production. The intimacy of the Blackbox Theater provided the perfect setting for this imaginative production, bringing the audience experience centerstage along with our actors. 

Behind the Magic

True to the spirit of Chatham Hall’s Performing Arts program, the production showcased the strength of our student ensemble. From tender ballads to lively musical numbers, the score carried audiences through moments of laughter, longing, and self-discovery. Each performer embraced the vulnerability and growth at the heart of the story, reminding us that love, while not without its trials, matures into something richer and more meaningful through experience.

Behind the scenes, the production was brought together by a dedicated crew led by Stage Manager Nadia C. ’27, with support from Sofi A. ’29, Nora S. ’29, and Bea S. ’27. Their work ensured the magic on stage unfolded each night seamlessly.

The Fantasticks proved once again why it has endured for decades: its message is simple yet profound. Love is not merely a dream beneath the moonlight; it is shaped by challenge, deepened by understanding, and strengthened through growth.
