Spring is the Time to Dig Deeper

The Class of 2029 at Red Hill

On March 26, the Class of 2029 stepped beyond the classroom and into the past with a day-long excursion to Red Hill – Patrick Henry National Memorial. From 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., students immersed themselves in a hands-on learning experience as part of the site’s Archaeology Volunteer Program, bringing history to life in a way no textbook ever could.

The day began with a guided tour of Red Hill, Patrick Henry's final home and resting place. As students walked the grounds, they encountered the stories, structures, and landscapes that shaped early American life, gaining a deeper appreciation for the people and events they’ve studied in class.

But the true highlight of the day came in the archaeology lab.

Here, students rolled up their sleeves and stepped into the role of historians and archaeologists. Through hands-on work with artifacts and materials, they experienced firsthand how fragments of the past are uncovered, analyzed, and interpreted. This kind of work transforms history from something distant and abstract into something tangible, analytical, and evidence-based.

Rather than simply reading about the past, the Class of 2029 engaged directly with it, asking questions, making observations, and drawing conclusions based on physical evidence. It’s this kind of experiential learning that deepens understanding and sparks curiosity.

Back in the classroom, students will build on this experience by exploring the methods historians and archaeologists use to piece together the past. They will also reflect on their visit, considering not only what they learned, but what it means to do the work of an archaeologist.

At Chatham Hall, learning is active, purposeful, and rooted in discovery. This trip to Red Hill is just one example of how our students are encouraged to think critically, engage deeply, and see themselves as participants in the ongoing story of the world.

Because at Chatham Hall, history isn’t just studied, it’s uncovered.
