Speaking the Names of Women

Women’s History Month Chapel

At St. Mary’s Chapel, the rhythm of the morning on March 24 felt different in the most intentional way. It was a gathering shaped not only by tradition, but by tribute. Our Women’s History Month chapel invited us to pause, reflect, and, most importantly, to speak aloud the names and legacies of the women who have made our lives, and this community, possible.

Framed by the theme *Leading Change with Wisdom, Strength, Creativity, and Compassion, the service unfolded as both a celebration and a call forward. From the first notes of the handbell to the final blessing, the chapel held a quiet but powerful energy, one rooted in gratitude and possibility.

We began with words that centered us in something larger than ourselves: the stories, struggles, and victories of women, both named and unnamed. These were not distant histories. They were living inheritances. In that moment, it became clear that Women’s History Month at Chatham Hall is not simply about looking back. It is about recognizing the throughline between those who came before us and the lives we are shaping now.

Music and movement deepened that connection. The processional hymn, “Lord of All Hopefulness,” reminded us of the steady presence that carries us through each part of the day, while the liturgical dance, offered by our students, gave physical expression to the strength and grace we so often name but cannot always articulate.

At the heart of the service was the litany, “We Speak Your Names,” by Pearl Cleage, adapted for our community. Layered voices echoed through the chapel, each line building on the last: Because we are wise women… Because we are strong women… Because we are creative women… Because we are compassionate women. It was both affirmation and inheritance. A reminder that who we are is inseparable from who came before us.

As the litany unfolded, student and faculty voices wove together a shared narrative of gratitude and responsibility. We spoke not just about these women, but to them, honoring the ways they have shaped our paths, our voices, and our courage.

Then came one of the most meaningful moments of the morning: the invitation for the community to stand and speak the names of women who have inspired them. One by one, voices rose across the chapel - some strong, some quiet, all significant. There was something profoundly moving in the simplicity of it. No titles, no explanations, just names. Each one carrying a story, a memory, a legacy.

In smaller circles, those names turned into stories. Laughter, reflection, tears, and quiet recognition filled the space as the Chatham Hall community connected with one another, sharing the women who have shaped their lives in ways both large and small. It was a reminder that leadership often begins in relationships, in the everyday acts of care, guidance, and belief.

Student reflections from Ana G.C. ’26 and Grace O. ’26 brought these themes into the present, grounding the morning in lived experience. Their words echoed what we know to be true: that the legacy of women’s leadership is not behind us. It is alive in our classrooms, our dorms, our friendships, and our aspirations.

A community prayer, written and offered by Rector Sara Stephenson, expanded that sense of gratitude. Naming the many roles women play in our lives: mothers, teachers, mentors, friends. It reminded us that leadership is not confined to a single title; it is found in the ways we show up for one another, again and again.

The service closed with a powerful charge: to be bold enough to inspire transformational change. Not someday, but now. Not elsewhere, but here.

Women’s History Month at Chatham Hall is not a single moment on the calendar. It is a living expression of who we are. A community grounded in sisterhood, shaped by those who came before, and committed to leading with wisdom, strength, creativity, and compassion.

And perhaps most importantly, it is a reminder that one day, our names will be spoken too.
