Callands Coffee Owners Honored on 33rd Lee-Yardley Day

Each year, Chatham Hall recognizes those whose lives have impacted the School on Lee-Yardley Day, named for former Rectors Dr. Edmund J. Lee and Dr. William W. Yardley, who served Chatham Hall for a cumulative 43 years. The Alice Overbey Award is given to individuals from the greater Chatham community for demonstrated, outstanding commitment and service to Chatham Hall. Overbey was a beloved neighbor, past parent, and former 26-year employee of Chatham Hall. 

During the ceremony in St. Mary’s Chapel, Acting Head of School Dr. Chris Proctor and Dean of Academics Martha Griswold spoke about this year’s deserving recipients and their impact on the School community throughout the past several years.

“A trip to Callands Coffee has become central to the student experience at Chatham Hall since 2018… From an academic perspective, Callands has made themselves available to our student entrepreneurs who learn about local businesses’ opportunities and challenges,” Dr. Proctor said. “You support our students, our teachers, and our extended community by providing a wonderful product with good service and a cheerful greeting. You make a difference not only to the Town of Chatham, but particularly to the daily life of the Chatham Hall community. We are delighted to honor you today.”

As noted by Dr. Proctor and Dean Griswold in their remarks, Callands Coffee is a beloved local coffeehouse frequented by both faculty and students daily. The family-owned and -operated shop located on Main Street Chatham fresh-roasts specialty coffees in small batches, and provides their products to restaurants in the region. They opened in 2018 after establishing themselves at the Competition Alley Farmers Market.
