Celebrating the Fall Sports Season

Chatham Hall
On Wednesday, athletes and coaches gathered in Van Voorhis Lecture Hall for the Fall Awards Ceremony.
Each team had their chance to share the highs and lows of the season that was, with special recognition of outstanding performances. Certificates were handed out to the Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player, as well as a Coach’s Award, for each team. We checked in with each of the fall coaches to see what they had to say about their teams.

Johnny Buck, Tennis - “This team consisted of 14 players with varying skill levels. Enthusiastic and eager to learn and improve, this collection of girls never gave up against the top players from VES, North Cross, and Covenant. The tennis program is strong at Chatham Hall, and with so many young players, the team should be in good hands moving forward.”

Ned Edwards, JV Tennis - “I am very proud that, according to our records, this is the first JV Tennis team in Chatham Hall history! But I am even more proud of the pioneering spirit, courage, and work these girls have offered.  We played 3 matches, and much to the surprise of the team, we won our very first match! We got rained out the second and lost our third, but for 7 wonderful days, Chatham Hall had an undefeated JV Tennis team! They played well, kept their spirits up and through the season we progressed from being a group of tennis players to being a true team. They loved getting onto the court to play and to practice.  Our co-captains, Andi Fiani '20 and Zion Andrews '22, led with good spirit, and every girl played an essential part in pulling together as a team.”

Friso Kuiper, Field Hockey - "With some incredible additions this year, the Field Hockey team came together and set high goals. Coming back from two difficult early season losses, the team was able to show how resilient they are and how quickly they can improve by going into quadruple overtime with the conference winner. The run of several notable wins led the team to the state championship: a first twelve years! I am thrilled for what the next seasons at Chatham Hall will bring, and know that the team has set an incredible precedent for teams to come.”

Hunter Barnhardt, Cross Country - "Our team was comprised of many young, new runners this year, but that never held them back in any stage of our training. Early season wins at the meets leading up to our race at Chatham Hall provided some great motivation as the team threw themselves into the workouts. I'm both proud and impressed by the work that the team put in, and think this season set the groundwork for a strong cross country team in the future."

Kirsten Blaesing, Volleyball - “Our team consisted of many wonderful, talented young women, who made the season one we will never forget. Our goal for the season was to challenge ourselves each and every day during practices, in order to be prepared for the challenges to come. We faced many teams that were more experienced than us, but we pushed through those moments and proved who we were as a team. We stuck together, motivated each other, and believed in each other when the challenging moments arose.”

Meredith Martin, JV Volleyball - “This year, we really wanted to have an emphasis on learning in our day to day activities with volleyball so the girls could take the steps necessary to reach the ultimate goal of making the varsity team in the future. This meant that we had to hit the classroom, as well as the court. We worked to ensure that the girls were coming away with a deeper understanding of not only how you play the game, but also why you do some of the things you must do to be competitive in volleyball. This turned out to be a great success, as we not only were able to win 4 individual sets, but we also came away with an electrifying match win! I am so proud of all of their hard work and determination to learn and appreciate the sport of volleyball this season, and cannot wait to watch the program grow in the future.”
