Model UN Travels to Johns Hopkins Conference

Chatham Hall
On February 8, members of the Chatham Hall Model UN Club traveled to Baltimore, Maryland to attend Session XXI of the Johns Hopkins University Model United Nations Conference.
Club sponsor, MacKenzie Watt, brought eight students to the conference, five of whom were attending a Model UN Conference for the first time. The Chatham Hall delegation had a weekend full of debate and problem solving, as members represented the country of New Zealand on committees addressing a variety of topics ranging from sustainability to infrastructure needs in developing countries.

Seniors Rachel Hightman and Smith Pittman had the opportunity to work on two of the conference’s governing bodies, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and International Crime Police Organization (INTERPOL), respectively. Both Hightman and Pittman crafted resolutions ratified by their larger committees, with the UNDP supporting gender equality through subsidies for women’s education and maternity leave and INTERPOL curbing illicit arms trade through the tightening of international gun laws. Other members of the Chatham Hall delegation worked on initiatives such as securing clean water in Sub-Saharan Africa, strengthening global resilience to natural disasters, and protecting World Heritage Sites. The weekend left attendees with a sense of pride and accomplishment, and the club is excited to host the upcoming Chatham Hall Model UN Conference on March 3rd.
