Spring Coaches Reflect on the Season that was

Chatham Hall
With the end of school quickly approaching, spring sports teams have all seen their last games of the season.
It was a spring filled with soaring wins and close defeats, so we asked the spring coaches to reflect back on the season.

Johnny Buck, Lacrosse
“The Lacrosse team came together this year with 20 players. There were only a few returning players, so  basic skills and rules of the game were an emphasis from the start. As a new program, we strive to push the girls to compete, both amongst themselves and in games, which led to a great team atmosphere that encouraged individual growth. Although our record indicates a winless season, we had many victories on our field both individually and collectively. Our shots improved, our passion for the game increased, and our ability to be aggressive on the field became more apparent. This team was a pleasure to work with, and both Coach Barnhardt and I are proud to have had the opportunity to work with these girls. As our team motto goes: Together with Heart!”

Juergen Fochler, Varsity Soccer
“The 2017 Varsity Soccer Team had another great year, and, for the 6th straight year, finished with a winning season.  For the first time in my time as coach we finished with a winning record in the conference, and ended up tied for second place.

Competition was much tougher this season, and the girls had to work very hard for each and every win.  Beating North Cross for the first time in many years was definitely the highlight of the season.  There were many outstanding players and leaders on this team, and, overall, everyone worked hard together to get on the field. The team cohesion and drive was in large part thanks to our senior leadership, with  Naomi Kane earning TEAM M.V.P. for her leadership and outstanding play.  There were many outstanding performances from everyone on the team, and, while we will miss our seniors, I am already excited to see what this team will do next spring.”

Vanessa Campbell, JV Soccer
“JV Soccer 2018 was a great success! We had a wide range of student–athletes on our roster for this season. The focus for this team was learning the basics, uniting as a team, and pushing ourselves to improve both on and off the field. Our team made their priority to work together in both practices and games. We were led by our two captains and great leaders Caroline Daly Penny ’17 and Guppy Utz ’18 this season.

We have improved immensely. From day one until the last day the girls were all invested in each other, the team, and the athletic program. As a coach I could not be more proud of these girls. I had high expectations for this team, and they went above and beyond those expectations on a daily basis. Our team consisted of a wide variety of skill sets, from girls that have never played before to those who have been playing since they were young. I was most impressed by the way the players worked with each others differences and skill sets to be the best team we could be. I am confident that these girls walk away with more than just an understanding of the game of soccer, but also with skills that can be applied to many different aspects of their lives.”
