Sophomores Selected for Prestigious Summer Programs

Chatham Hall
Two members of the Class of 2019 will be participating in highly competitive summer experiences.
Mira Alpers has been selected to participate in the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) and will be traveling to Tajikistan. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, NSLI-Y) provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students and recent high school graduates to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs, with the intention of preparing them for careers with an international focus.

Alexandra Casker has been chosen to participate in the Sorensen Institute's High School Leaders Program (HSLP). The HSLP is based on a firm belief that young people not only can make a positive difference in their communities, they should be strongly encouraged to do so. She will spend 2 weeks at the University of Virginia engaged in programming that gives students the practical skills and political knowledge to become effective advocates in their communities and schools. Participants engage in substantive debate about the public policy challenges facing the Commonwealth and interact with Virginia's political and business leaders.
