Senior Wins Scholarship in STEM Essay Contest

Chatham Hall
Senior Naomi Kane ’17 has been selected by the Virginia Council on Women as a winner in the 6th Annual STEM Essay Contest. Chosen amongst 500 entries, Kane is one of five recipients of this prestigious award for this year, and will be awarded a $7,000 scholarship for her efforts.

Along with the other award winners, Kane traveled to Richmond this week to meet with Governor Terry McAuliffe and First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe, who  served as Honorary Co-Chairs for the contest. Speaking at the event, Governor McAuliffe remarked, “Encouraging young women to pursue their interest in STEM is critical to growing the new Virginia economy.  I am grateful to the Council on Women for helping women explore the ever-growing STEM field and giving them resources to prepare for a successful future.”

This yearly contest is sponsored by the Virginia Council on Women with the purpose of recognizing women for their accomplishments and impact on both the Commonwealth and larger society. The STEM essay contest is one of many initiatives aimed at identifying and encouraging outstanding achievement at the high school level.
