Mieses, Suarez, and Yun Give Community Concert

Dr. Nermis Mieses, associate professor of oboe at Michigan State University and faculty at Sewanee Music Festival, performed with pianist Xavier Suarez and Chatham Hall’s Director of Music Dr. Francis Yun on Jan. 4 in St. Mary’s Chapel.
The concert included works for oboe from the 18th century to the 21st century as well as works by female composers, with members of both the Chatham Hall and local communities in attendance.

“It was wonderful to have Dr. Mieses and Mr. Suarez perform for us,” said Yun. “The concert brought world-class music to Chatham and was a great way to kick off our second January Term during which our students really get to explore personal passions — like music!”

Dr. Mieses introduced the audience to the oboe via Sonata in D Major for Oboe by Alessandro Besozzi, during which Yun performed on the harpsichord. Following that, Mieses performed Marina Dranishkova’s Poem and Edwin York Bowen’s Sonata for Oboe and Piano, op. 85 along with Suarez on the piano. The concert concluded with Alyssa Morris’ Four Personalities, which is inspired by the Hartmann Personality Test.

Dr. Mieses has won various prizes and awards, including the  University of Michigan Paul Boylan Alumni Award, Barbirolli International Oboe Competition, First International Oboe Competition of FEMUSC, and others. She made her debut as a soloist at the age of 15 with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Puerto Rico and now frequently performs with the internationally renowned Sphinx and Chineke! orchestras, and is an active recitalist throughout the Americas and Europe.

In addition to being a pianist, Mr. Xavier Suarez is a vocal coach, piano teacher, YouTuber, and founder of Teclado Music Institute. He is a former music director and Young Artist for Pensacola Opera in their 2016 season, and collaborated at the 2013 Manhattan Summer Voice Festival as vocal coach and keyboardist. He has been a faculty member at Friends Music Camp, and accompanist for choirs at Bowling Green State University and Bowling Green High School in Ohio.

“I am grateful to both the Joan Danforth Cook Fund and the Sarah Benson Fund which made this concert possible,” noted Yun. “It’s wonderful that Chatham Hall and our extended community are so supportive of the arts.”
