J.T.-Minnie Maude Trust Supports Local Chatham Hall Students

For more than a decade, the J.T.-Minnie Maude Charitable Trust based in Danville, Va. has supported eligible Chatham Hall students with financial assistance for higher education.
The first Chatham Hall student to be honored with an award was named in 2008, and since then the Trust has awarded almost $24,000 to Chatham Hall graduates alone. It has awarded more than 6,300 scholarships in total.

“The J.T.-Minnie Maude Charitable Trust is a wonderful example of a local organization assisting local students achieve their educational goals,” said Dr. Erin McHugh, dean of college counseling. “Whenever we have a student from an eligible county in the area, I make sure to connect them to the Trust so that they can apply for assistance if they would like to do so.”

Named for  James Thomas (J.T.) Emerson, a local Danville man who counted among his proudest moments the graduations of his family members, the J.T.-Minnie Maude Charitable Trust also honors the life of his mother. Emerson believed that while education would not necessarily guarantee a successful life, it would certainly give someone the “ability to compete.” He directed that the Trust’s primary goal would be to provide financial assistance for higher educational opportunities to deserving students in the Danville area, and the Trust’s secondary goal would be to assist the residents of Danville and Pittsylvania County, Va. through grants to tax-exempt organizations.

To be eligible for a scholarship from the J.T.-Minnie Maude Charitable Trust, a student must be a U.S. citizen and a resident for at least 12 prior consecutive months in the Virginia counties of Halifax, Henry, and Pittsylvania (including towns & cities within) or the North Carolina counties of Caswell and Rockingham (including towns & cities within). Students interested in applying for a scholarship should be in touch with Dr. McHugh.
