Fang Brings Folk Songs from Afar to Campus

Acclaimed pianist Dr. Jeannette Fang performed Folk Songs from Afar for the campus community on May 11. The concert theme was the influence of folk songs on the work of Amy Beach, Karen Tanaka, and Bela Bartok.
Fang performed Beach’s Variations on Balkan Themes, Tanaka’s Techno Etudes II, and Bartok’s Sonata. Between performances she also delivered a convincing argument on techno music as the modern folk tradition.

Fang has been the pianist of the acclaimed Garth Newel Piano Quartet since 2015, where she also serves as the co-artistic director. She has received many prestigious awards, including the Gold Medal, President’s Award, and Audience Favorite Prize at the Seattle International Piano Competition, and top prizes in the Dallas Chamber Symphony International Piano Competition and MTNA Young Artist National Competition.

Fang has collaborated with the Parker Quartet, Aaron Berofsky, and Juliette Kang, among many others, and is a founding member of the Khemia Ensemble. She received her DMA from University of Michigan and holds degrees from The Juilliard School and Yale University. She currently hosts the podcast So Many Wrong Notes.

The concert was generously sponsored by the Sarah C. Benson '47 Endowed Music Fund and Joan Danforth Cook '48 Concert Lecture Fund.
