Alumnae Reunion Returns to Campus

From April 29-May 1, more than 100 alumnae from the Classes of 1957-2017 returned to Chatham Hall for Reunion 2022.
“We were thrilled to be able to be back on campus this year after two years of virtual Reunions,” said Director of Alumnae & Parent Relations Carmen Garcia. “Our program offered events in all locations and even a little rain couldn’t wash away the fun.”

Reunion kicked off with a presentation by Chatham Hall Archivist and former teacher Dr. William Black on Lucy Lee’s Empowerment of Chinese Women, 1915-1927, and continued with campus tours and the Alumnae Association Annual Meeting and Awards. A Heritage Society reception was held in the Tea Room, as well as a Class of 1972 50th Reunion Dinner at the Rectory and Purple & Gold Dinner in the Van Voorhis Lecture Hall.

This year’s Alumnae Award winners included Sherley Young ’57 receiving the Distinguished Alumnae Award and Imani Brooks ’16 receiving the inaugural Leader on the Rise Award.

“Chatham Hall has a unique opportunity to shape its students into culturally competent, socially conscious and dedicated leaders through the school’s curriculum, campus programming, and off campus excursions,” said Brooks during her remarks. “There are only so many places where you can get a glimpse of the whole globe via your peers without even having a passport and even fewer where you are encouraged to do independent research in any area. Female leadership is a norm set by example by Dean Griswold and Rector Connell and a value embraced by staff and faculty who dedicate their time to Chatham Hall students.”

Other award winners included Muffin Grant ’66 receiving The Nancy Gwathmey Award as an alumna who demonstrates superior skills in fundraising, Mary Kay Karzas ’71 receiving The Ellie MacVeagh Award as an alumna who best represents the School’s goals for fellow constituents, and Annette Kirby ’80 receiving The Mildred Harrison Dent Award as an alumna who demonstrates an enthusiastic long-term commitment and devotion to the ideals of Chatham Hall.

On Saturday, alumnae were treated to a Student Life Panel & Entrepreneurship Showcase followed by talks on Revitalizing Curtis’ Garden and Faculty Housing Updates. The Alumnae Award Remarks took place during lunch, and was followed by class photos and time for visiting the stables, Lee Library, and Whitner Art Studio. On Cloud Wine, an event presented by Ridgley Knight ’09, rounded out the afternoon.

A Reunion Celebration including the Alumnae Council Silent Auction took place on Saturday evening, followed by the traditional Reunion Chapel and brunch on Sunday.

This year, a number of events were included in the schedule to celebrate beloved teacher, coach, advisor, mentor, colleague, and friend Cathy “La” LaDuke. Her posthumous VIAAA coaching honor was officially presented to Dean Martha Griswold, while a Celebration of Life took place in St. Mary’s Chapel. A Lantern Ceremony conducted by the Class of 2022 was also held in honor of La.
