IEA Team Named Champion at Regional Finals

On Saturday, Feb. 12, the Chatham Hall IEA team hosted the Region 8 Regional Finals in the Mars Arena. The day consisted of both team and individual competition, with six high school teams and more than 60 individual rides.
Chatham Hall took an early lead in the team competition with a win by Sophie Croker Poole ‘23 in Walk Trot Canter, followed by Elle Reeves ‘25 earning a win and another seven points for the team in Novice Flat. Individually, Croker Poole rode strong to a win and a spot to ride at Zone Finals in Walk Trot Canter. Reeves also had a consistent second ride and finished second overall in Individual Novice Flat.

Carolyn Whatley ‘23 rode as an individual in both Novice Flat and Novice Fences, as well as representing the team in Novice Fences. With a tough draw, Whatley got stronger with every performance in the ring to finish fourth for the team, and second individually, just missing a spot at Zone Finals.

The afternoon started off well with a third place finish for Annabele Whitehead ‘22 in team Open Flat. Zoey Horn '22 wrapped up the team Flats with a flawless performance earning her the win and an additional seven points on the team board. Individually, Whitehead took home the blue in the Open Flat and will join Croker Poole riding at Zone Finals as an individual.

In Intermediate Fences, a small mistake put Piper Vogel '22 fifth for the team, and fourth individually. The final team class of the day saw Kensington Nelson '22 pilot a tricky draw to a well deserved third place finish. This set the team five points ahead of Champion and a guaranteed a spot to compete at Zone Finals! Nelson wrapped up her day with a strong trip in Open Fences as an Individual and a second place finish.

Chatham Hall's own horse Gilly was named horse of the show by the judge based on his steady presence throughout his classes.

The team, as well as Croker Poole and Whitehead, will compete at Zone Finals March 19 & 20 in Upper Marlboro Maryland. Good luck, Turtles!
