The Archive Presents

The Chatham Hall Archive recently opened a revolving exhibit of the history of Chatham Hall in Lee Library. Two display cases near the main entrance will hold approximately 10 different exhibits this year, each on display for three weeks.
The debut exhibit depicts the earliest years of Chatham Hall from 1894 to 1905, while the second and third will feature the burning of the original School and the building of Pruden Hall, and the 1910s and 1920s. Interspersed with the chronological displays will be exhibits of archived items including, for example, a hat from the 1920s that girls wore to go to church, as well as gloves and a hat pin from the era.

“We have many new students so I wanted to keep a running history of the School visible for them,” noted School Historian and Archivist Dr. Bill Black. “The Archive is down in Willis where not everyone goes, so this was a chance to really bring our history to them.”

The Archive, located on the basement floor in Willis Hall, is arranged by year and features items such as yearbooks, literary magazines, newspapers, and items of clothing.

“Chatham Hall has a very rich history,” said Black. “It’s important to know where we’ve been and what we’re made of - and that is strong, sturdy stuff.”
