Millner Armstrong ’77 Appointed to Virginia Commission for the Arts

Frazier Millner Armstrong ’77 was recently appointed to the Virginia Commission for the Arts by Governor Ralph Northam. The Commission’s vision is a creative culture in which equitable access to arts engagement and learning are fundamental to the lives of all Virginians.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to work to make arts and culture accessible and affordable to every Virginian,” said Armstrong “I’m thrilled to foster support and awareness among our citizens about the value of the arts as a healing, communal, shared experience, and to advocate for arts education and increased funding to support new and emerging art disciplines as well as the necessary and important larger organizations.”

For Armstrong, the arts have been a lifelong interest as well as a foundational part of a multi-faceted career. After earning a B.S. in mass communications from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), she wrote for the Waynesboro News-Virginian, worked in marketing, public relations, and fundraising related to the arts. She has also served on the board of the Richmond Symphony among many other arts-related opportunities and has been honored as an Outstanding Woman in Media and Marketing by the YWCA of Richmond as well as one of Virginia Business Magazine’s 100 People to Know in 2020.

“Going to Chatham Hall gave me the confidence to try most anything,” noted Armstrong. “It gave me a respect and love for the written word. Although not published widely, I love to write and it is my fallback, my safe place and I hope to do more of it. I mostly write poetry now. I fell in love with theatre there and acted and directed a bit. I have a penchant for exploring and adventure - whether it’s meeting new people, finding new places or seeking out new ways of thinking. I love to learn.”
