Whitehead ’22 Wins Twice at Lexington National Horse Show

Annabele Whitehead ’22 and horse Gunther recently won two separate competitions at the Lexington National Horse Show, including the Virginia Horse Show Association (VHSA)/EMO Agency (EMO) Junior Championship on the Flat and the VHSA/EMO Hunter Seat Medal Championship.
“These are both classes that you have to qualify for at previous shows,” explained Whitehead. “For the Flat Final, a total of twenty-seven riders were split into three sections and, after these sections, the top twelve were called back for the test. There were twenty-one entries in the Medal, and there is a first-round which was a 3'6" course. After the first round, I was in fourth with a score of 84. The next round is a test which brought me up from fourth to first!”

Whitehead, who has been riding for about 10 years, recalls welcoming her first pony, Elmo, as her favorite riding experience.

“He helped me discover my love for riding,” she said. “We actually still have him. I love almost everything about riding, but my favorite thing is how it is an escape. When I walk into the ring, I forget about everything else and focus on that moment."

For Whitehead, her upcoming return to campus brings with it not just the excitement of seeing favorite people, but also favorite places.

"I am super excited to return to campus to see my friends," she said. "And I cannot wait to see all the friendly faces at the barn!"
