Students Explore Spirituality on Retreat

Laura Kirk '20
On February 7 and 8, Chatham Hall students joined their peers from local high schools at Emmanuel Episcopal Church for a Spiritual Retreat.
Senior Laura Kirk was one of the organizers of the retreat, and shared this reflection on her experience:

Over the weekend, a group of us traveled just down the road to Emmanuel Episcopal Church for a wonderful spiritual retreat. We heard talks from Rev. Crites and our guest from the Diocesan office, Megan Dern, about different aspects of religion and spirituality. We then discussed what these topics meant to us in a small group of just students. In that small group, we also did activities to make physical representations of how we felt. One example of this is that we decorated masks to represent how the way we may present ourselves can differ from who we are inside.

Throughout the weekend we had the chance to explore different prayer stations and forms of prayer such as undoing knots, praying with M&M’s and walking a labyrinth. Each girl had the opportunity to even make their own Anglican prayer beads, and we learned how to use them. One of our favorite parts of the weekend was when we went on a scavenger hunt around town that ended in us praying for each location and the people we visited.

One of the ways we wrapped up the retreat was by participating in a service project. We put together 50 bags of emergency supplies for victims of domestic violence. This experience allowed us to explore our own spirituality, but it also helped us form stronger bonds with each other and the whole community.
