Model UN Club Attends Conference at Johns Hopkins University

Annie Radtke '22
Last week, members of the Chatham Hall community traveled to Baltimore, Maryland for the Johns Hopkins University Model United Nations Conference. Annie Radtke ’22 was one of the students in attendance and shared with us this dispatch from the conference:
I was in UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization), a general assembly that met twice a day for 3 hours each. Other committees that met included a Futuristic General Assembly, Brexit: House of Commons, and Joint Crisis Committees.

Each committee was given 2 topics before the conference and both topics served as the base for discussion and debate. Different committee topics ranged from how to phase out fossil fuels in UNIDO to creating a Brexit deal that satisfied both parties in the House of Commons. My committee had around 80 students in it, but the size of committees ranged from as little as 12 students to 100. Each assembly spent hours debating and sharing ideas on the topics, with each individual voicing a different country's perspective. For each topic, countries had to collaborate and write resolution papers, then present them to the rest of the committee. Resolutions for different committees varied, for UNIDO, one of our resolutions that passed was the creation of a group of scientists to examine countries and address their potential for the implementation of renewable energy based on their geography and economy.
For the House of Commons, a Brexit deal was made that was strict on immigration and in favor of a single market economy. Representing Thailand in UNIDO, I was able to work with developed and undeveloped countries to progress the investment of technology in countries and to find solutions to phase out fossil fuels. Drafting and writing a resolution was arguably the most interesting and challenging thing about the whole conference. During unmoderated caucus (debate time where delegates are free to walk around and talk), countries convened and discussed ideas and solutions. It was very interesting to hear the resolutions that other countries came up with to solve the same problems. Overall, my experience at JHUMUNC not only allowed me to learn more about sustainable industrial development and pressing issues in the international community but collaborate with others to form effective solutions.
