Patrick Gray of Durham University Explores The Merchant of Venice with the Sophomore Class

Professor Gray spoke with the Sophomore class on Wednesday night about The Merchant of Venice, which the class has recently finished studying. During his lecture, Gray expanded on some of the often-overlooked sections and subplots of the play, as well as important historical context for understanding the text in the modern era. Along with his engaging dissection of the play, Professor Gray shared information about Durham University and spoke with the students about his experience as an American student attending college in England.

Remarking on the lecture, English Department Chair Dr. Mary Edmonds said, “We were delighted to host Professor Gray!  His love for Shakespeare, his keen interest in Renaissance ethics and theology, and his preference for reading Shakespeare in the context of his time shone through his lecture on The Merchant of Venice.  He not only offered the Humanities students a different perspective on the play, but he also introduced them to the idea of college study abroad.  He is welcome at Chatham Hall any time!” The visit was organized by Director of College Counseling Dr. Erin McHugh, in part, to share opportunities for studying abroad at the college level.
