Students Share Their Expertise on GIRLS Day

The day started with brunch, featuring a made-to-order pancake station staffed by faculty, leading into four, student-led breakout sessions. The morning sessions were the culmination of months of preparation by student presenters, offering immersive presentations and lectures on topics close to their hearts. Topics included both hands-on demonstrations, such as Ancient Chinese Architecture, tap dancing, paper making, and a honk orchestra, and experiential or cultural talks, like self-care, a personal connection to the nation of Ghana, and Islamic culture and beliefs.

After a break for lunch, featuring a chocolate fondue fountain, students split into two groups for the afternoon.  The Junior and Senior classes headed to the gym and library for unstructured “recess” time, with stations set up for games, yoga, meditation, and other activities. Meanwhile, the Freshman and Sophomore classes attended a workshop facilitated by representatives from the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network (RAINN) on sexual misconduct prevention, education, and awareness on GIRLS Day. Students learned to discern healthy from unhealthy relationships, how to prevent inappropriate behavior, and how to respond to something inappropriate they may see, hear, or experience. The two groups switched places halfway through the afternoon.More surprises lay in store after study hall, when Rector Buck declared that Wednesday would be a free day. In all, participants enjoyed another GIRLS Day filled with bonding, exploration, and fun by taking time to learn about the myriad talents present in the Chatham Hall community.
