Celebrating Black History Month

Chatham Hall
The Chatham Hall community came together on Friday, February 8 to celebrate Black History Month with a chapel service and Arts showcase.
The events were organized with the guiding vision of “Black history is American history,” and with a student-organized chapel service featuring poems highlighting different time periods between 1619 and the present day. With each time period, students spoke to the individual experiences of people living at the time. The poems included voices of the first slaves brought to the United States through Virginia, emancipation in 1865, the Civil Rights Era, and the modern-day experiences of African-Americans. Reflecting on the work of the student organizers of the events, Associate of School Life for Community Inclusion, Khadijatu Rahim said, “This year, the girls really wanted to stress that black history is American history. There is no separating it-the good, the bad, the ugly, the inspiring.  I am extremely proud of the girls and the work they put in for this program-from the poetry to the dance but especially their passion and the education they passed on. They astonish me every day.”

The celebrations continued that evening with the Black History Month Showcase, which featured songs, dances, and poems from students. The performers shared both original work and inspirational works from famous authors, as well as a special performance from the Quintet. Both events were impactful demonstrations of the passions and talents of the Chatham Hall community, as well as the shared desire for open dialogue.
